BAMAffectionately known as BAM, the Brooklyn Academy of Music is the nerve center of performing arts in Brooklyn. While it may be Americas oldest performing arts center, born in 1861, it is best known for nurturing and staging the arts of tomorrow. The 7-story building houses a 2,109-seat theater, which has hosted legendary acts from Bill T. Jones to Vanessa Redgrave. It also boasts a 46-foot proscenium, the BAMCafé, BAM Rose Cinemas, a Brownstone Books outpost and a small gallery on the entry level. The Winter 11 calendar is rich and varied. The free Next Wave Art exhibit showcases some of Brooklyns most exciting young artists exploring a range of media, while the cinema consistently screens some of the most captivating art-house, foreign and first-run films. BAM welcomes big names like Patti Smith, while also opening doors for the budding young filmmaker. On a mission to be a home for adventurous artists, audiences and ideas, BAM will always be a beacon in the NYC art world. Browse their site for opera, plays, dance and film, then book a ticket to experience what is sure to be some of the most memorable art of its time.
